چکیده

THE relation of the cerebral cortex to the activity of the sympathetic nervous system is not yet fully clear. The clinical and experimental observations, which have recently been reviewed by Kennard (1937), have been conflicting, and there have been few quantitative determinations of the effects of cortical stimulation and ablation upon the functions of the human sympathetic nervous system. Many indices of sympathetic function have been used in the past, peripheral vascular changes, the psychogalvanic response, sweating, pupillary changes, and visceral contraction being the most usual. The " galvanic skin reflex " is dependent on an intact sympathetic nervous system, and may be accurately measured. It has therefore been widely used as an index of sympathetic activity in studies of cortical function. In 1905 Bechterew stimulated the medial part of the anterior sigmoid gyrus in the cat and caused sweating of the pads. The response was greater on the contralateral side. Winkler (1908) obtained a symmetrically equal response to similar stimulation. In 1930 Langworthy and Richter found that faradic stimulation of cortical areas similar to those used by Bechterew lowered the skin resistance of a cat's pads. The response was bilateral, but was greater on the contralateral side. Schwartz (1937) continued the investigation by excising known areas of the cortex in cats, and observed the " psychogalvanic response " to various stimuli for three to six months afterwards. After unilateral removal of the area frontalis agranularis, peripheral pain and stimuli associated with fright caused no response on the contralateral side, but responses to sudden pressure on the limb remained symmetrically equal. Excision of cortex elsewhere did not modify the response in any way, so that Schwartz postulated two types of response-a " segmental galvanic reflex " independent of cortical control and a "psychogalvanic reflex " with a true cell station in the area frontalis agranularis.

Evaluation of the Neuroendocrine System and the cytokine pattern in warm and cold nature persons.

Introduction: Traditional Iranian medicine (TIM) is accompanied by little side effects in experience. The mechanisms involved in TIM are not much clear. The purpose of this study is assessment of differences of warm and cold nature persons in neuroendocrine system and cytokine pattern (Th1/Th2) of immune responses. Methods: Thirty seven 20 to 40 years old male volunteers were divided into 2 ...

Tonic and reflex control of the cardio-respiratory system by neurons in the ventral medulla

To investigate the channels and neurotransmitters in the ventrolateral medulla (VLM) oblongata that are responsible for the maintenance of sympathetic tone and cardio-respiratory reflex regulation. Microinjections of excitant amino acid (glutamate, 100 nl, 100 mM), calcium channel blockers, agonists and antagonists were made throughout the VLM in anaesthetized rats. Arterial blood pressure, sym...

Investigation of sympathetic mechanism of inverse relationship between scalp and leg blood flow with increasing intracranial pressure in the rabbit

Intracranial pressure (ICP) is one of most important factors in determining health and function of cerebroscular system. However the methods of measuring ICP are usually invasive . In an attempt to find a noninvasive method to assess ICP, in previous study web found a reverse relationships between changes in ICP and blood flow in scalp (SBF) and leg skin (LSBF) . In this study the role of sympa...

نقش سایکونورومدولاتوری هورمون آزاد‌کننده کورتیکوتروپین در زنان مبتلا به PCOS

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common complex condition in women associated with reproductive and metabolic systems and also psychological disorders. There is considerable evidence to suggest that the sympathetic nervous system is involved in PCO and metabolic syndromes. Noradrenalin (NA), corticotrophin releasing hormone (CRH) and nerve growth factor (NGF) are the strong sti...
